What Should You Bring to Your First Oncology Appointment?

Bring your pathology reports, imaging, treatment history, medication list, insurance or payment information, identification, and written questions. When possible, bring a trusted person who can listen, take notes, and help you remember what was discussed.

Preparation does not require understanding every medical detail. It simply gives the oncology team the clearest available picture and helps you leave with usable answers.

Bring the Original Information When Requested

Reports are important, but physicians may also need the underlying imaging files or pathology materials. Ask before the appointment whether discs, electronic transfers, slides, or tissue blocks are required.

Include recent laboratory results, operative reports, hospital summaries, and molecular-testing reports. Arrange information chronologically when possible.

Create a One-Page Treatment Timeline

List the diagnosis date, major procedures, medications or radiation received, important scan results, and any serious treatment reactions. Exact dates are helpful, but approximate dates are better than leaving important care out.
